[Groove] E-News 1224 17th January 2021

Hello music fans

In these day and times it is pretty difficult to stay focussed and creative. I miss the planning and working on the festivals which also is a great inspiration to make new music as you know you can perform the music or play it for everybody. On the otherhand it gave me the time to organize the studio and rebuild it from scratch. So it works great again. Lot's of Synths have left, some new ones arrived  Let's make some music I would say! Down here is a photo of the current studio :-).

So no reason to not make more music, having some cool other musicians comming over this month to start some cooperations, so I am looking forward to start creating music again.

Some one who never sits still is my dear friend Frank Dorittke, check out this great music. https://fdproject.bandcamp.com/track/black-mirror

Frank is again in topform.

29115 Parallel Worlds and Dave Bessell - Phosphenes
http://www.groove.nl/jump2.php?artnum=29115

The stark, surreal and gothic are most present on “Phosphenes”, the third abstract-ambient effort of Bakis Sirros and Dave Bessell who share a passion for vintage instruments and the powerful, in-depth sounds they can produce. The eight tracks centre on cinematic and haunting atmosphere building, intriguing analogue sound design with only sparse melody alongside crispy sound effects and rhythms. A more sedate, smoother and almost dreamy sphere is heard on “Silent Observer”, contrary a set of harsher, malevolent spheres gathering on e.g. “Obscure Memories”, “Darkest Colour” and the psychedelic-ish “Mindgames” (where Dave adds a touch of e-guitar). The tricks of the minds are given a voice on the slightly symphonic “Dream Creator” before “Inner Beacon” rounds out the fascinating recording in a lush, tasty but also melancholic sense. I for one feel this piece could do very well alongside end credits of a movie going by. Thumbs up, guys!
3.5 stars out of 5.

GR-220 - UNI SPHERE - Endless Endeavor
http://www.groove.nl/jump2.php?artnum=gr-220

On October 24, 2015, the annual electronic music festival E-Live took place in Brabant. In my opinion, the highlight of the day was the performance of UNI Sphere. UNI Sphere is a project by Eric van der Heijden and René Splinter. We know the experienced Van der Heijden from his melodic, calm music. Splinter is a fan of the sound of Tangerine Dream from the first half of the eighties and that can be heard on his albums. During the concert I also regularly got a feeling of listening and watching TD from - roughly - the period Logos, also because of the decoration of the stage. Music should be a total package and the guys from UNI Sphere have understood that well. The music on Endless Endeavor is particularly melodic and compelling. The first track Pivoting Pathways opens as film music. The sequence in the second part is very strong. The gentlemen also play nice piano. We hear that in Radiant Realm. Again, there is a hint to TD because of the rhythms. Then the music becomes more menacing in Vulnerable Values. In Jocular Jive they use a lighter sound. I have the impression as if Johannes Schmoelling (ex-TD) is here playing solo on a Roland Jupiter 8, but it is really Splinter. After a quiet moment in Compromising Colors, the title piece is in my opinion the best song on the CD. The central theme is very strong. Then in Liberating Loyalty a short trip to Vangelis follows, but in Eloquent Esposure and Obviosly Orbiting one returns to TD. The Jupiter again has a major role in Contemplating Calmness. Van der Heijden and Splinter really delivered a piece of art with Endless Endeavor, one of the best albums in the field of melodic electronic music I have heard in years.

80385 Hyperkube - Remnants http://www.groove.nl/jump2.php?artnum=80385
Where to start? By specifying that REMNANTS is an album recorded in concert in a post office, PostX, in the town of Merelbeke in Belgium by a chilly November 24, 2018. The key word to remember from this sentence is Belgium. The chances that our ears will cross significantly more progressive and daring stuff are higher when we talk about Belgian School. And that's exactly the case with this first album from Hyperkube. The name of this project can play on your intuitions, since we find the roots of the word Kubusschnitt as well as the names of its albums, that you won't be surprised either. In fact, those who have been following the evolution of EM for more than 20 years will be familiar with the name of Tom Coppens who was an important member of the EM band Kubusschnitt. This group was composed of Tom Coppens, Jens Peschke, Ruud Heij and finally Andy Bloyce who mastered this album. And I would say that the influences of this progressive group , especially at the level of the rhythmic developments of the sequencer, which are like very in Ruud Heij's style, are very present in this album which surfs mainly on the albums Pacific Coast Highway and The London Concert by Christopher Franke, without forgetting Impulse and Pointless Reminder from Free System Project.
A drop of sound stretches its effects at the opening of realm, giving the sequencer this little moment of creativity in order to draw a line of harmonic rhythm. Another line hops in this darkened decor with its increasingly opaque sonic veil. realm then becomes a nest of sequences that opens up to all possibilities under orchestrations, murmuring gas effects and apocalyptic Vangelis-style synth blades. Here, as everywhere else in REMNANTS, our ears are confronted with an evolutionary structure which surfs on two possibilities: ambient music or soft rhythms. Very active, the sequencer is simply divine by dividing its possibilities with lively and methodical keys w hich infiltrate oblong structures where cling the usual treasures and the momentary impulses of the synths. This first title depicts the moods of what will follow with its soft rhythm which goes up and down with an effect of alternations at the level of the sequenced keys, as well at the level of the rhythms as of the tones. The ambiences are vaporous and even nebulous with chthonian vapor effects and layers of a keyboard dressed in church organ. The music is constantly evolving to tie in with a more fluid movement which develops a harmonious Chris Franke's approach in Pacific Coast Highway. The finale becomes a moment of dark atmospheres with ululations which are transposed in the introduction to the title track. Where the synths sound strangely like Vangelis in Blade Runner. remnants offers a more lively structure with a synth and its spectral songs which cover a more unified structure of the sequencer. And if you are a lover of sequencer and sequenced rhythms with keys that you w alk while dribbling, this title-track will catch your interest on the field. Being a long 45-minute musical mosaic, there is no interruption in the cosmic hymns that mark the course of REMNANTS. So, we can hear the same elements inside different titles. It's in cosmic broth of boiling waters that calling from beyond challenges our curiosity. This title which brushes the borders of psybient awakens gently with a very good movement of the sequencer on which is grafted a keyboard in copy-pasted mode and various organic effects. This title is very Tangerine Dream between its Virgin and Jive period. Except for its second half which offers a structure of cosmic psybient with a Vangelis intimidated by this sound fauna and very skeptical on the keyboard. the fields of aaru returns to these chaotic and feverish rhythms to guide us towards a monstrous finale in in fine principium and its superb lunar melody.
Distributed by Littl'Antenna Rec. and Belgian NeuMusik, REMNANTS requires time an d an open mind because its music is like a swarm of scattered sound particles which gradually come together to follow directions that are not always clear, hence its constantly changing movements. I would say that it's an album which is aimed a little more at lovers of disjointed rhythms that are pushed by a very creative sequencer. And after a few listenings, you will be able to note that it has become a musical virus which has found its place in the back of our ears.
