[Groove] E-News 1261 30th November 2021
Hello all

A short E-News, lost of work and music to be handled some cool special releses planned!!

Sad news this week as a great festival is now also cancelled thtough Covid.

B-Wave Festival canceled!

It is with great pain in our hearts that we (CC Muze, modular404, B-Wave) have to announce that the B-Wave Festival will not take place this year. Due to the sudden flare-up of covid19 and the adjusted measures, unfortunately, we cannot offer the great experience we had in mind. Under these circumstances, we cannot guarantee the safety of the visitors (and all the people behind the scenes), while we as organizers feel responsible not to spread the virus further.

We first considered postponing the festival, but ultimately decided to cancel it.
All tickets and stalls/tables of exhibitors will therefore be refunded.
We think this is the right decision in these special circumstances.
Thank you for understanding.

32134 - Wavestar - Two

Expect the unexpected! Heavy of meaning, this sentence makes buying and discovering TWO more than a little suspicious. But let me reassure you right away; the unexpected is not really far from the roots of John Dyson and his new companions, Stephan Whitlan and Paul Ward who form the second episode of Wavestar; Wavestar II. The album is sewn in a vision more ambient than lively with a huge place for the synths which exploit their own sonic identity in a music that flirts a lot with an electronic Celtic genre. And Pauper's Ransom immediately reassures us with a hazy opening that lets us hear some synth chants with deceptive appearances. The songs are tender and melancholic with a slightly sharp tone. Spasmodic, an initial rhythmic lead plunges the track into a static flow with this synth and its melodic tunes that make the arpeggios floating all around them dance. Sweet and dreamy, this first part of Pauper's Ransom gives way to a more progres s ive electronic rock about ten seconds into the 6th minute. The synth chants, each with their own sonic identity, dominate this rock structure, which is push by good percussions, well managed by Paul Ward, which structures a driving rock. A big track for fans of synth solos and melodies performed by John Dyson and Stephan Whitlan. These synths coo in the opening of A Gesture which borrows a vaporous shade from the Tangerine Dream's Legend years. The ambient rhythm is articulated on two intersecting sequencer lines, one of which is more melodic, while haze pads amplify the influence of the Dream on this track which ends with synth solos. The tone changes with the arrival of The Hurting, a melody with a nostalgic spirit pushed by a synth and possibly a mellotron. It's very beautiful, tender and moving. Although a bit mysterious, Visionary is a bit in the same mold as A Gesture with sequenced arpeggios that exploit a harmonic hue of John Carpenter's Halloween. The rhythm remains more h a rmonic than driving with an atmospheric vision that suits well the numerous synth solos that like to exploit their own musical colours. Another Country amplifies this bucolic essence that comes out more and more as you discover TWO. Exploiting a moving texture like that of The Hurting, the music flows under the chords of a nice acoustic guitar that does not miss its rendezvous with a delicate piano.

Peaceful and moving, Bloodline continues in this vein of Celtic ambient music, almost spiritual, with a delicacy that translates into layers of mist gathering in a funeral procession gently pushed by a soft bass line. There is no flow, but a lot of sensitivity and emotionality accentuated by these layers of seraphic voices and trumpet tunes that come and go to torment a soul in search of answers. It's also with layers of mist flooding a ground in growth that Throne lands in our ears. From this musical mist is born a circular rhythmic movement structured by a sequencer where another l ine of glittering arpeggios is also stuck to give more depth to this second rhythmic approach of TWO. A good bass line establishes the link to percussions whose uncertain hits favor a sober singing of the synth. These vocals coo with melodic vision as keyboard riffs fall in symbiosis with the percussion. We come to Second Arrow and this track is the one that led me to describe the essence of this album as electronic Celtic music. The structure is very cinematic with its bed of orchestrations cradling the music in light and barely jerky staccato. The choice of instruments; flute, harpsichord, violin and Irish monastery choir exchange the roles of bucolic melodies. A very beautiful track with a more intense finale whose texture brings me back to Mike Oldfield mixed to Vangelis. The opening of Paragon features John Dyson on guitar, and boys he plays great! His guitar stretches out musings and solos, a bit bluesy, over a blanket of haze and occasional orchestrations. The ambient moveme n t lights up in the second half of the 3rd minute, creating a ballad that flows to a pensive bass line. The synth takes advantage of this to stretch its solos like the crying voices of a melancholic guitar played by the famous English guitarist, Gordon Giltrap, in a fascinating electric/electronic duel, inviting the orchestrations to create a static rhythm lulled by the movement in legato. Paragon falls afterwards in a good electronic slow dance where this duel between Gordon Giltrap and John Dyson concludes this fascinating album of Wavestar II that is indeed not what we were expected.

Solos and melodies of synths which flow and fly in profusion on structures more panoramic than rhythmic, this TWO possess different attributes which are not without charms. I like this bucolic freshness which gives this Celtic aspect in ambiences sewn of mysteries and of country nebulosity. For dreamers, fans of Mike Oldfield and Tangerine Dream!

17215 - Orchard, Steve - Listening for a Heartbeat

Steve Orchard's albums don't always pass that well. No! I'm expressing myself very badly here. I'll re-phrase. It's difficult to dive into Steve Orchard's universe after listening and analyzing a big progressive EM album or a psybient very dark and ambient. It's important to know that the music of the English guitarist is quite far from the borders of the EM style that I review. However, David Wright from AD Music regularly sends me his label's albums without putting any pressure on me. And sometimes, it's the beginning of a story. The last reviewed album of SO goes back to Skyway which had its little gems. It's following my discovery of the very beautiful Heart of the Shamman, by Divine Matrix, that I got interested in this LISTENING FOR A HEARBEAT. I thought it sounded very Mike Oldfield with deja-entendu all over the place in this imposing collection of titles more interesting than disappointing.

It's after some suffering cries of a gu itar that Spyglass twirls in a big electronic rock belted with flickering sequences. The layers of sounds accumulate between ethereal layers and orchestrations sometimes overexcited and at times cinematographic. The electric guitar is not without reminding Mike Oldfield, impression hidden in the majority of the titles of this album. One easily taps of the foot here! It's a duel between acoustic guitars which solves the introduction of How Many Worlds. A first melody is traced in the second layer of guitar to be transformed in the sharp melody of what sounds like an electric guitar. We're in the ballad genre here and if you're familiar with Seda Bağcan's Miracle, you're in familiar ground. Tropic of Capricorn is a track that is more about the percussions. They drum a structure without frontiers that serves well the interests of the electric six-string. Operetta offers a surprisingly sneaky structure that moves forward in slow jumps. It's a track that is efficient for laying dow n Steve Orchard's tasty guitar treatments. One can indeed hear an operetta, but also samples, in terms of whistled/fluted harmonies, of Walking on Wooden Legs from Johannes Schmoelling's Wuivend Riet album. Signal House layers a funky-rock structure with particularly good percussions. Apart from the vocals humming wooo-wooo-ahoom, we have a good rhythm structured for harmonies and guitar solos as much inspired than inspiring.

A Confidence in Heaven is a very beautiful track. Ambient, the movement is built on humm-humm-humm sounding a bit like MO's The Song of the Distant Earth, and synth layers with hybrid and well ethereal tones. The orchestrations are like honey on this structure tanned by a benevolent sun. The percussions get in near the 5th minute with vocal and cosmic effects always close to TSOTDE's controls. The rhythm turns into ballad with a beautiful piano which covers the harmonies of a guitar dreaming of solos already proposed in LISTENING FOR A HEARTBEAT. The orchest rations break the bonds of the naughtiest wanting to play hard. A genuinely nice track! In the inviting stuff, we find Static which flirts with the style of Michael Rother and his album Katzenmusik which flirts on its side with the memorable Neu!. Predicting the Distance offers a world beat with an Al Di Meola style guitar. The music flirts a bit with the heavy rock of Spyglass. But only a little! To the Naked Eye is a kind of rock with good percussions and a huge bass that frame quite well this melodic approach trying to dive for a future in the pink-candy pop. It's a listen to it well, even though I admit I'm getting further and further away from the album. But romantic and melancholic as I am, I couldn't resist this dramatic opening provided by the piano introducing Moons. And no matter how much of a moody ballad it is, I loved it all the way to its finale! Moons and the title track bring me back to the moods of LISTENING FOR A HEARTBEAT with a good romantic slow title played un d er the full moon bringing together the flavors of Patrick O'Hearn and Darshan Ambient. It's a playful piano followed by big percussions, an acoustic guitar and finally a flute that invites us to Solar Safari. As its title indicates, we are in the kingdom of World Music in a vision too festive for a safari.

As you can see from this review, I was more than conquered by the very diverse music of this album. At no time we are in the genre of progressive EM. In fact, are we in the EM genre? But that's not important! The important thing is that LISTENING FOR A HEARTBEAT gives us almost an hour of music filled with those links that make us nostalgic. A beautiful album that found a gap in my state of mind to sneak in.
