Rob Papen had a great idea for this E-Day. And after a cool telephone call with Rob I said yes within a second!! 
So!! Last week there was a great loss to the electronic music scene with the death of Klaus Schulze. There will be a musical tribute on E-Day 14 May by two well-known Dutch musicians, Rob Papen and Ron Boots in honor of Klaus. Both have always been very influenced by Klaus!!

47208 Stearns, Michael - Planetary unfolding -2022-

Originally released in 1981 on the Continuum Montage label, then Sonic Atmospheres in 1984-85 and the Bandcamp Earth Turtle Music site since 2015, it was with amazement that I discovered PLANETARY UNFOLDING! Let's start this review by highlighting the great initiative of the label Projekt Music which launches a series of reissues in manufactured CDs and digital downloads of some of the most influential works of Michael Stearns. The American label will offer 13 albums from the catalog of the Tucson, Arizona-born ambient sculptor. These titles are mostly discontinued and unavailable on CD, while some are available in a sound quality that meets the requirements of various online listening platforms and then on Stearns' Bandcamp. It is therefore an excellent initiative with new remasters that do justice to the music of this influential artist in the spheres of contemporary cosmic music. I wrote astonishment, since it is the first time that I lis t en to PLANETARY UNFOLDING thus discovering the essences and the colors which were diluted in what I always considered as classics of electronic music (EM) from the United States, that is to say his albums M'Ocean and Chronos which however appeared 3 years later. And if you liked these two albums, you'll find the main lines, as much in ambiences, as in melodies and rhythms in this 5th album of the American synth wizard.

A buzzing wind takes over our ears from the first seconds of In the Beginning.... Rising with intensity, this synth wave hooks multiple cosmic sound parcels to its graceful movement that undulates like the slow procession of a crawling reptile. The musicality of this ambient texture can be heard from its undulating loops in a dramatic accentuation that lets filter harmonies prisms that we will hear in a more elaborated way in Chronos. Except that PLANETARY UNFOLDING does not have the identity of Chronos, it is its cradle. And a track like Toto, I've a Feeling We'r e Not in Kansas Anymore! proves it by 10. The whistling winds are born from the finale of In the Beginning.... And not even 10 seconds in, you can hear a slight mechanical flutter amplify as the moods take on a more austere, dramatic edge. The voices here are more solemn than on the previous track and combined with those buzzing winds that sound to our ears like the slow movements of a drifting space shuttle, they add a Dark Ambient Music dimension to this fascinating procession of cosmic winds. The metallic clicks also mutate into felts as discreet as two atoms caressing each other in a cosmic jelly as they transform into percussive elements with changing personalities. The first sounds of intergalactic exploration video games are probably originated from this fascinating tonal setting that Michael Stearns offers to our ears. The winds of Toto, I've a Feeling We're Not in Kansas Anymore! are migrating to Wherever Two or More Are Gathered. There where the Modular Serge synth displa y s a sonic dimension of an extreme intensity and where a first rhythmic life beats in PLANETARY UNFOLDING. The melodious winds of Chronos are drawn from here and they shimmer over a bass layer that makes crawling its spells under a bed of prisms displaying its contrasts on a rainbow-colored cosmic river.

This short moment of noisy rhythm disappears into the darkness of a finale that flows into the muted vibrations of Life in the Gravity Well. The cosmic mermaids and their bewitching chants nestle to this address, just after an UFO falls into this well. We are close to the melodious oceanic ambiences of M'Ocean here and a dull pulse beats in this seraphic setting that recalls the turbulence of Angels, Bells and Pastorale in this Stearns' album that has served as the sound reference for Ron Fricke's film. The pulsations are more secret in As the Earth Kissed the Moon and these synth lines which dissociate to regroup at once in a melodious atmosphere where the waves sing as much as the birds chirp on a title which unites the two melodious poles of M'Ocean and Chronos. This seraphic opening leads to a second part where the intensity makes us raise the hairs on the arms, as on the soul, in a magnificent pastoral procession which progresses towards the rhythmic explosion of PLANETARY UNFOLDING. This first rhythmic phase is set on frenetic beats that are muffled by a cloud of synth layers whose bluish colors sway like a flag waved by violent winds. These layers undulate like a herd of waves trying to escape the oceans in an atmospheric tumult of an intensity as fierce as ephemeral. If the rhythm hasn't exploded, its imprint vibrates in our ears while the finale of As the Earth Kissed the Moon exploits its musical bipolarity to pours out its restrained fury in a dance of electronic hooves whose slams borrow the vertiginous intergalactic path of Something's Moving. The rhythm is without appeal with a swarm of various clapping in a random dance whereas the synth lay e rs marry this flight of a space shuttle in the unknown of Cosmos that Stearns seems to have cleared with the accuracy and the nobility of his art. One cannot avoid the parallels with Chronos, even if it is its genesis

Michael Stearns is without doubt the pioneer of the Pacific School. His first albums, Ancient Leaves and Sustaining Cylinders, are clearly inspired by the initial albums of Tangerine Dream, pre-Virgin period, as well as the dark and ambient works of Klaus Schulze, like Irricht and Cyborg. PLANETARY UNFOLDING follows the curve undertaken by the influential Morning Jewel, to whom the New Age label was clumsily, and unfairly, attached. It's a beautiful album and the beginning of an impressive collection of works unique in both style and vision. It seems to be the beginning of a cosmic trilogy that would end with Encounter, an album I still haven't heard and which, according to the specialized critics, is a reference in the field. A very nice initiative from Sam Rosent hal and his precious label Projekt Music.

gr-329 Tronestam, Johan - Androids

Cutting Edge doesn't waste any time! The sequencer starts a pulsating line that zigzags in a slow strobe motion and already Johan Tronestam's solos fill our ears with a tasty analog bouquet. Vintage solos on a sequencer that spins the rhythm in cosmic orchestral arrangements are the prerogative of the first 2 minutes of Cutting Edge. Already captivating, it becomes even more so with the bass percussions that stimulates a rhythm evolving towards a good cosmic rock, half a minute before the 3rd. Welcome to ANDROIDS, the latest intergalactic adventure of the Åland Islands musician-synthesist. And the least we can say is that JT delivers here an excellent album where the influences of Jean-Michel Jarre flirt with the essences of Michael Garrison. Inspired by the immense possibilities, as much as the dangers, of Artificial Intelligence and the ever accelerating evolution of robots, Tronestam offers 8 evolutive tracks that are articulated around c a tchy rhythms always in permutations phases making them so fascinating, if not magnetizing. These polyrhythmic structures are born of rich atmospheric soundscapes filled of cosmic orchestral haze as well as secret voices, while the many beautiful synth solos are poetry without lyrics. This other excellent production of Groove nl is available as a manufactured CD, as well as a download on the website of the Dutch label.

And if like me you like these heavy and soft rhythms, your ears will be gorged to satiety on ANDROIDS. And it starts with Self-learning that get rid of these slow layers spreading their oblong wings in two colors on a distance of about 2 minutes. The synth weaves a short melody that feels very analog, releasing a tasty soft and slow rhythm sets on a bass-sequence line. The banging are catchy and are driven by great synth solos, the key element of ANDROIDS, in a structure that changes its rhythmic DNA in seductive phases, often with biphasic sequencer structures or circular lines grazing each others, culminating with the arrival of percussions between the 5th and 6th minute. All along its evolution, and the principle applies for the 6 other tracks, JT floods his rhythms, as his ambiences, of very good synth solos and hazy orchestral textures. At times, we have the impression that Gert Emmens contributes to the album so much the sequencing is that close. Awakenings stands out by the power of its synth solos. Synth that was also dominant in its opening. Its ascending rhythm line is born from between the entrails of a gargantuan beast, and as the solos roar, another structure centers in its midst and waddles until the percussions restructure the rhythm into an elegantly syncopated circular trance. Orchestral layers feed its ambiguity as the waddling movement works in an increasingly magnetizing manner. Artificial Intelligence does not have this long atmospheric intro. Its driving rhythm emerges from the 35th second under a cosmic night shrouded b y solos and melodious snatches of a synth wandering between the universes of Jarre and Garrison. It is melodious and energetic cosmic rock which sounds like in the good years of the French School.

Drones coming from hollow breezes occupy the first 115 seconds of I'm Here. Slow synth layers emerge. Their musicality bows to the ambiences that fill with vocoder lyrics as a jerky effect from one of the threads of these layers is escaping to create a wave of reverberations. This setting brings us to the 5th minute where a soft, slow rhythm, swaying over tap effects, evolves into a heavier, driving structure some 2 minutes later. The vocoder is still heard, as well as some good percussion elements, on a heavy and slow structure with an excellent strobe angle and a synth that fills our ears with always great solos. Theatrical like a Walter C. Rothe work, I think of Let The Night Last Forever, the opening of Among Us leads to a first sober rhythm structure that will take a more dynamic growth about 20 seconds before the 5th minute. The sequencer speeds ups a line of ascending bass-sequences and another one whose unruly flow sculpts a spasmodic structure as in dozens of marbles hitting each other on a conveyor belt. Sumptuous lyrical solos brush past this biphasic structure under layers of cosmic mists and absent voices. Like Cutting Edge, Equality doesn't waste a second in order to introduce its sequencer which weaves a circular movement that develops with hashes in its flow. Its sound envelope breathes that of the vintage years with nice synthesized harmonies that furnish an increasingly accelerated pace. Its flow follows the trend of Among Us in a more sober musical envelope and always attracted by a cosmic vision. Let's say it's the kind of track that explains why it's not always necessary to put almost 80 minutes in a CD! Especially since it precedes the splendid, dramatic and melancholic Andromeda (A.I.) whose opening pushes on the influences of Vangelis in B lade Runner. A silky opening that leads to a rhythm that provides chills, so much so that its blossoming is anything but what one would have thought. A semi-slow and circular flow with theatrical flights of the synthesizer weaving solos and melodies in an interstellar mist whose each rhythmic pulsation resounds like a drop of rain on a skin of tenderized by these shivers. A very beautiful title which concludes a very solid album from Johan Tronestam!

Crowned of 8 tracks maximizing the art of captivating and melodious electronic music, this ANDROIDS from Johan Tronestam offers a very pleasant listening where our ears discover the art of wonder from track to track. An excellent musical journey in the heart of the cosmic French School in a no less excellent production by Groove nl. An album to own!
