[Groove] E-News 1241 23th May 2021
Hello .

Last week I told I would upload the new Dreamscape that week, but with the new job that has started this month and all the backedup work it is hard to get things done on time. So we have the new Dreamscape for you on line this week. Sorry for this!

We have added some cool new releases to the catalog, and plan to add a lot of new titles tomorrow as it is a vacation day here in the Netherlands and it gives me time to do this.

Gert Emmens and me also finished the music for our upcomming release! We are now working on the booklet and we hope to release it soon. Expect fat, fast and melodic Sequencer music.

This week I also have a meeting with the new Venue for E-Live! And we hope next week to have a the big picture for this Festival but IT WILL GO ON as it looks!! Many wrote me they can not wait until we can be joined toghether again in a festival! The world is slowely opening up again!!

Here some nice youtube streams with cool electronic music from Groove.
Gert Emmens - The moment it becomes present, future reveals itself

Presentation of the album Cosmic Steps - by Johan Tronestam

71765 - Johannes Schmoelling - 21

1 - Philosophical Robots [Merz / Schmoelling] [8:28]
2 - Against The Courtiers [Ader / Schmoelling] [5:45]
3 - House Of Mirrors [Behrens / Schmoelling] [6:08]
4 - Outer Limit [Ringlage / Schmoelling] [8:11]
5 - Spun Sugar [J. Froese / Schmoelling] [9:13]
6 - Escape Plan [Ader / Schmoelling] [5:59]
7 - Swordplay [Waters / Schmoelling] [8:34]
8 - Reflections [Merz / Schmoelling] [5:47]
9 - Old Days [Behrens / Schmoelling] [5:44]

This brand new 2021 album by ex-TANGERINE DREAM member JOHANNES SCHMOELLING was created together with several other players from the scene, including his partners at LOOM: Jerome Froese and Rob Waters, his synthesizer engineer and musician friend Kurt Ader, musicians Lambert Ringlage and Jonas Behrens, who worked with Johannes on his "A Thousand Times" albums as well as with Andreas Merz.

57431 - Erik Wollo - North Star

Renowned Norwegian ambient / electronic artist Erik Wøllo presents «NORTH STAR». The album evolved from layers of sustained guitars inspiring infinite space and a minimal essence, creating a spell of slow, melodic calming space. As a musical metaphor, the North Star represents limitless possibilities and infinite wonder with sparks of imagination from which dreams are formed. The sustained Ebow guitars aim the music in a totally new expansive direction with melodic elements, rhythmic arpeggio loops and some percussion added to the treated guitar ensembles. The mood sets the emotional direction: vast and spacious, minimalistic and sparse in character. «NORTH STAR» is an inward journey of stillness and reflection. Music that shifts between contemplation and intimacy, impulse and reflection.
17215 - Steve Orchard - Listening for a Heartbeat

Steve Orchard has a wonderfully relaxed style of acoustic and synth based, symphonic instrumental music that at times echoes the likes of Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream and Michel Rother while always maintaining an individuality that is clearly ‘Steve Orchard’.

‘Listening for a Heartbeat’ invites us to share another cosmic journey full of imaginative themes, rhythmic delights and strong orchestration, all underpinned with excellent guitar work and strong synth work.

There are great arrangements here, with occasional use of vocal textures adding a very classy layer on tracks like ‘Operetta’ and ‘Signal House’. But it is Steve’s excellent guitar work that deserves special mention because it is the understated way in which the guitar layers are incorporated into the music that enables his music to rise so far above similar music of the genre. Add that to the excellent synth work on tracks like, for example, the haunting opening section of ‘A Confidence In Heaven’, and you have a really classy offering.

There were also times on ‘Listening for a Heartbeat’ when we were reminded of some of the great synth album of the 1980’s, not just because of a few musical similarities, but simply because of the feeling of adventure in listening to something new and different.

The artist himself thinks this album might be his best work to date…it’s difficult to disagree with that.

21565 - Divine Matrix - Heart of the Shaman

Heart of the Shaman’ is probably the finest Divine Matrix work to date. It has deep undulating tones and slow burning, driving rhythms and occasional gothic inspired vocal layers. So this album shows a shift from his more cosmic orientated music and so becomes a darker and more ‘earthy’ affair.

This is quite simply a powerhouse performance, expansive and stunning in its scope and it demands your attention. From the astonishing opening track ‘Into the Deadlands’, through to the final thought provoking ‘Shadow Whispers’ and ‘Lament to the Dead’, Divine Matrix evokes gorgeously evocative atmospherics and hypnotic rhythms and sequences that cast a captivating spell.

So there is an otherworldly feel to the music, because it engulfs you. It pulls you in and is so captivating and almost sensual in its feel. And it is amorous, it is moody…and it is quite simply

24488 Adrian, Rudy - As Dusk Becomes Night

Rudy Adrian, on Spotted Peccary, is an artist committed to defending the tonal colors of his New Zealand. The winds down under don't have the same colors, nor the same effects. They are fluty and their breezes are full of Tibetan tinkling. The fauna rests mainly around the songs of birds, the pecking of woodpeckers hitting the wood to split their heads and the bewitching movements of percussive bells of giant rattlesnakes. The New Zealand artist has this tiny honor to make a clear distinction between his ambient works and those driven by the sequencer-based style of the Berlin School that we find on Groove. Unlike Woodlands, AS DUSK BECOMES NIGHT offers 11 original tracks without the shadow of a rhythm, except for the dark Western Wind. This new album is essentially based on layers of winds with aromas of serenity lying down with the help of the Yamaha SY77 and its complement in the Yamaha Montage 6. Thus, giving this consistency in the soun d s and ambiences constantly sailing in serenity.

It's with a chant of wood and a swarm of parasitic noises driven by heavy winds that Stars Appear installs its tranquility with a musical envelope pushed by an action of Aeolus. A nice fluty chant emerges. Its melody is poignant as its harmony climbs to reach ever higher peaks. This prismatic air extends like a synth layer weakened by its emotional peaks always pushed higher. Tingles adorn these ambiences with a good effect of a nocturnal piano crumbling above a tail movement of a giant rattlesnake in a universe with a Vangelis ascendant. These Stars Appear's elements will be on the menu for the next 10 tracks from Rudy Adrian's new album. Starting with the title-track and its cloud of waves which extend such a peaceful musical panorama. This immense static layer radiates a deaf humming in which secret voices are hidden. It's like hearing the wind whistling over a huge frozen lake. Conifer Grove is a short title animated by the breaths of a flute that make these coniferous cones tremble while animating a secret horde of chimes whose awakening stirs the dramatic side of a more reverberating layer. The strong winds of Star Lane propel us into a dark environment. Hollow winds are dominant and the ringing of bells, as well as the shamanic ones, bring a chthonic ambience to the album. The rain singing coming from the water droplets heralding Moa Caves is a delicious little find. The dark keyboard chords bring an ambient rhythmic progression where the impression of going in circles brings to our ears a sound fauna, equivalent to the colors of an underwater polar aurora, well detailed.

Other forms of ringing, less acrimonious, awaken the first radiations of The Crepuscular Wildlife, a title shaped in the remains of Stars Appear. A nice fluty air sings among the many radiations of the Yamaha which also extracts a nice slew of sound effects from its interstices. A good title which reconnects me with Rudy's musical values. It's in the spells of this giant rattlesnake tail, or even a bird song unknown to my ears, that the layers of Moonlit Beach (for Jeff) move forward with an endlessly perpetuating wave multiplication effect. They serve as a bed for this synth song, so rare in this album, and in connection with the nature of AS DUSK BECOMES NIGHT. A percussive chord sculpts a spiral procession which turns in the opposite direction of the layers, showing another possibility of charm in this distancing of two poles. Lakeside Shelter embraces this tranquility, this poetry under the full moon that dresses most of the music on this album. The ambiences are secret, keeping an open door on the dark ambient side from which a little mist, as well as prismatic airs, escape. Western Wind is the only title to offer beats. They are scattered over a very dark structure whose black winds bring to our ears these dusts of semi-decomposed specters, we can even hear them a little, in a universe as dark a s that of the Exorcist. Night Becomes Dawn brings back some of these ambiences, while Sunny Day reflects the philosophy of its title with the gentle impulses propelling layers filled with solar energy in a vision of atmospheric music without the shadow of a rhythm.

An album of pure ambient music, AS DUSK BECOMES NIGHT is the perfect companion to relax or to visualize the wild beauty of New Zealand whose videos are flocking all over the Internet. We can try to sleep on it, even if its core breathes of the dark side of EM with deaf impulses giving more life to its tenebrous aspect. But Rudy Adrian's predominantly optimistic vision returns to express to us in music the splendours of this corner of the planet where nothing is like elsewhere!

38895 Pollard, Brendan - Isolated Passages Part 3

Woosshh, dull neurotic beats and electronic effects, both chthonian and astral, are at the origin of Devolved's dimension. Brendan Pollard doesn't exceed 70 seconds to make us visit the limbo of what remains of the coat of arms of Tangerine Dream that already the dull rhythm becomes a fluid zigzagging movement of the sequencer. Another line settles under the roar of the synths, giving an air of race to this first title that plunge us in the ambiences of ISOLATED PASSAGES THREE. The layers of voices fly over these two rhythmic lines as well as the vocal tunes of a synth sculptor of surrealist ambiences. There are these beats which come and go to annoy a little this titanic course of the pure Berlin School that BP soberly reminds by scattering snippets of harmonies drawn from the Mellotron. The rhythm becomes slightly convulsive, like a disarticulated puppet that refuses to give up, in a momentum supported and fortified by chords that come and go to decorate its speed. Speed that little by little crumbles under the weight of what the sequencer carries and that brings this crazy train of Devolved to a phase where everything is dark and surrounded by murmurs of fog some 10 minutes later. A land of grainy woosshh and organ sound that casts a murky veil under reverberation's cracks. A small phase of almost 3 minutes before a form of rubbery suction cup makes vibrate the waves subjected to a colony of Mephistophelian monks. A 3rd part of Isolated Passages? Why not...

Brendan Pollard has more than one trick up his sleeve to keep our ears riveted to his compositions, which translate into the always very good Berlin School for the aficionados of the genre. ISOLATED PASSAGES THREE is announced as being the last album of a series of 3 that began barely 1 year ago. For many, the feat seems trivial. All he has to do is open his equipment and start improvising to add some meat around this new bone. But the passion and the way! Brenda n has it and is quite creative in the way he puts it all together. This latest installment is like the last one, which was like the first. Nevertheless, the English musician-synthesist manages to introduce contemporary elements in textures conceived more than 50 years ago. Quite a feat, you may say! But when the passion and the way of doing things are there, there is no more, or almost, comparable.

Solitude of Motion shows that you can string together old and untie it like new! In an introduction drawn from the sound effects of the Ricochet and Rubycon years, a zigzagging and reverberating wave is coupled with a soft, fuzzy tune in a Luciferian vision. An initial pulse forms and its bouncy flow goes hand in hand with the reverberating lizardry that attempts to illuminate the darkness of Solitude of Motion. Its limp cadence is supported by another line that zigzags like a train running on tubular twists. The synth throws reverberating harmonies over this static two-speed structure . And like Devolved, this slower rhythmic surge ends around the 8-minute mark, plunging the track into a world of woosshh and waasshh. A universe of sonic drizzle from which come those strange, not to say sordid, borborygms of a hungry creature. The resonant beats of Configure don't waste any time to call the sequencer which releases immediately a rhythmic line more fluid and especially heavier than in Devolved. The mellotron covers these first moments of a Berlin School whose ascending line leads to the tinkling of small chimes. The mellotron comes back with a monasterial choral layer where loops of ambient harmonies multiply on the stoic and resonant beats of the Moog bass. Hypnotic and magnetizing, the rhythm keeps us awaken up until the finale. Awaken because then arises the movement of On Air and its bouncing suite of limpid arpeggios fixed to a sequencer in mode Berlin School. This very beautiful moment in music escapes on its route of 13 minutes with very beautiful harmoniou s synth solos in a structure of EM which has all the old Berlin School in a skin refreshed in a form of revival. Excellent! The Final Passage says everything! From the top of its 20 minutes, the title must amputate more than 9 minutes in a liberating introduction for the analog and modular synths. Liberating since Brendan eviscerates their interstices in a suite of bizarre noises mixed with others more conventional to the genre. The rhythm is pulsating and beats the measure in a corridor decorated with the layers of an old progressive rock organ. The rhythm is catchy and makes you hear the clicks of a double that follows its shadow with another line whose misstep stimulates its speed while falling those magnificent synth solos with apocalyptic trumpet harmonies. Scents of Edgar Froese are here... The sequencer always finds a way to give juice to its main rhythmic line by inserting keys that modify a structure always fed to please the most refractory of the last lovers of Franke-Froe s e-Baumann. It's a last lap of a series that has no reason to die out so much the talent, the passion and the way of making of Brendan Pollard embraces us the ears always eager of his intrusions in the genre.
