The best album in the field of Berlin School so far this year, A Night at Blackrock Station is this special one that we discover a new thing at each listening. A powerful and striking offering from Gert Emmens and Ron Boots

Gert Emmens and Ron Boots in one album! It is impossible, and unthinkable, not to have our ears as open as our mouths were gaping when we heard the news at the end of May. And what can we expect? A NIGHT AT BLACKROCK STATION is a big one! A big album at the height of what we can expect from such a collaboration between two artists who are at the top of their art. This very good production from Groove nl label is anchored in big heavy and evolving electronic rock in ambiences which fits very well this fascinating cover. It's Ron Boots and Gert Emmens, in fusion and in solo, who have made it their mission to give us full the ears.

Austere chords cast a reverberating outline that radiates off the movement of the sequencer and its double jump line emerging after the timid THX effect that introduces Flock of Swallows. Add another line with organic sequences, which hop along in parallel, and bits of synth solos, and the opening of this first Boots & Emmens' collaboration is tightly woven with a dramatic vision matched only by the nostalgia displayed in the synth solos. Unabated, and with a rhythmic background that constantly reminds me of The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again, Flock of Swallows is woven so tightly that the emptiness of a nanosecond is impossible. Heavy and not too static rhythm, creative sequencer, dark atmosphere and Emmens-like solos adorn a first rhythmic direction that changes its orientation around the 6th minute. The rhythm then becomes a pulsating mass, provided by the bass, allowing keyboard chords to chime in an ambience always attracted by the dark side of EM. The sequencer has other plans. And 90 seconds later, it picks up this charging circular motion for a strobe-like momentum that is pierced by keyboard riffs with a fuzz tone of an electric six-string. It's around the 8th minute that a small swirl restructures the music to take us back in Phaedra time with a heavy sequencer rhythm created to make the mellotron flute sing. Percussions, pulsating bass line and sequencer structure a driving rhythm with pads that sound very Tangerine Dream, ditto for the title-track by the way. The rhythm goes for a last modification, around the 12th minute, in order to highlight the synth solos of the two Dutch synthesists. Speaking of TD, A Woman on the Platform seems to be inspired by the album Le Parc, with its nostalgic and dark vision that unravels to offer an electronic ballad sewn for synth solos.

If you're missing some MorpheuSz, 02:17 AM takes you there, as well as into the progressive music territories of Gert who plays guitar and drums on this track. You have to hear those amazing and enjoyable percussive elements that bang behind the drums and guitar solos. Awesome and daring! It's a big progressive electronic rock with a rhythm that's catchy enough to make our trunk swing back and forth, hands in our pockets and all embarrassed. The track reaches a metamorphic phase around the 11th minute to offer another good rock, catchier I would say, designed for a Pink Floyd-like keyboard and synth solos with a slight jazz flavor. We take the ambiences of Animals, we inject some ecstasy and it gives the second part of 02:17 AM! The rails of The Nighttrain didn't stop start to heat up a few 115 seconds after its opening ambiences. It's the sequencer, seconded by a cloud of clattering percussions, that structures this rhythm that rises and falls like a train proper to the Berlin School style. The falling and dancing electric piano chords remind me of the superb Wanderer of Time - Part 2, an important track on Gert Emmens' latest album, Time Portal Chronicles. They add an essential depth to adorn the landscape which is suffocatingly heavy as the intense and frantic rhythm releases imposing banks of heated mist. And when it's too much, the slamming percussions add the musical charcoal that becomes as essential as those chords that disappear only to reappear later. I have rarely heard such a powerful track, over such a long distance, in Ron and Gert's repertoires. Wonderful! A big, crashing chord opens the title-track. A shadow forms in the reverb to ripple fiercely, driving a lively rhythm that a synth-guitar effect pinches with sharp notes. A Night at Blackrock Station is also on an evolving rhythm that goes from heavy to fluid before taking on an atmospheric bridge just before the 5-minute mark. At this point the synth wails with a vision that is so Le Parc from the Dream with smooth vocal pads and arpeggios dancing in a circular motion that fat, naughty sequences follow. Gradually, A Night at Blackrock Station escapes in a good progressive electronic rock with its ascending rhythm machine-gunned by percussions and embellished by synth solos and finally by those murmurs of mist of the Le Parc's years.

A colossal work! A NIGHT AT BLACKROCK STATION is signed by two artists who respect each other's territory while being able to follow each other's creativity. It gives simply incredible titles! Evolving tracks that go off on rock tangents, like delicious Berlin School structures with a sauce Hollandaise.

 53422 Transceive - Transformation 88:98

Transceive had seduced the world of EM, heavy and catchy format, with the intense Intrigue in 2002. Since then… silence! Now Steve Nelson reappears with a new not entirely new opus since it contains material composed between 1988 and 1998, hence the title TRANSFORMATION 88:98. Despite more than 16 years of difference between the first sketches and the final product, the tone and the spirit are very current with a furious mixture of styles as diverse as Mark Shreeve, Jean-Michel Jarre, Depeche Mode and Juno Reactor. You will understand that with such inspirations, this album is not one to seek, and find, sleep.

Landscape of Tomorrow aggressively starts this compilation of new works. Beyond the dismal sound effects, heavy chords trace an intriguing path which explodes with good percussions and a round and juicy linear sequence. An aggressive synth pushes a pretty nice melody which befits well this electronic rock of England School style. Th is opening is an omen to the rhythmic strength that will bombard our ears for the next hour. Aggressive, the rhythm deviates with subtle nuances in the tones and retains the same structure in a fiery e-rock that has become more progressive with good arrangements. With its hesitant piano Element of Intrigue plunges us into the atmosphere of thriller films. Pressed on light floating and slamming percussions, the sequencer is heavy and swirls on the echo of its undulation. Very melodious, the synth brings this touch of mystery. An avalanche of percussions drummed over an anvil of glass sweeps over the heavy and nervous rhythm of Moving Target. Samplings of voices give a paranoid dimension to this track which pounded its linear vision vertiginously. It's a heavy and hammering title which scrolls with ferocity in a whirlwind of knocking percussions. After such an intense track, a rest for the ears would do good. This is what we imagine with the opening of Biomechanoid. Error! The percus s ions announce an unbridled rhythm supported by a big buzzing bass line whose techno-dance vision is raised by the tsitt-tsitt and other percussive clicks. Another powerful title that burns the soles of the feet by hopping and hitting the dance floor.

With aboriginal percussions and flutes of a chimerical jungle, Steve Nelson uses vocal samplers of a Yeti film to give more realism to Creature of Legend. A beautiful electronic ballad with seraphic choir and a virtual guitar playing as fast as its shadow on a powerful rhythm but well calibrated to maintain a romantic effect. Fine curly percussion and floating synth pads provide a dark atmosphere to The Rebus Tape, one of my favorite track here. The rhythm explodes with powerful drums, causing the anger of a synth that lets out beautiful scarlet streaks before resuming the road of a sinister tranquility. At the halfway point, the rhythm changes squarely to take a heavy and jerky movement which is at the borders of a moderate techno. This is not entirely the case with Delusions which is an intense and over-excited title where the frantic rhythms cohabit wonderfully with harmonies and good vocal samplings. Facade is a short atmospheric piece with a velocity nourished by enveloping and threatening layers, a bit like the very ambient The All Seeing Eye which is the most calm and restful title of this TRANSFORMATION 88:98. This quiet track precedes the fiery techno of Eastern Promise. Thru Rugged Terrain closes this latest Transceive album with one of these ferocious rhythms that endlessly dot this hot album. The rhythm is heavy and abrasive with frenzied percussions overflown by melodious strata and superb synth solos.
Intense and melodious, rhythmic and harmonious. TRANSFORMATION 88:98 strikes with the power of a train that knows when to decrease its pace with more relaxed and more harmonious passages. The arrangements are quite good and clearly encircle its more melodious phases which flow in a whirlwind of hellish rhythms, even flirting with nuances of big techno. For those who like to move on a music where the eardrums connect with our cerebral hemispheres.

58771 Nattefrost - Secrets of the Universe

A cosmic wind resolves the deadlock as Nattefrost speaks to us through his vocoder in a heavy ambience of a horror film. Desire progresses with an air of Mark Shreeve. The pace is soft. Despite a certain velocity of the clicks we feel that the bass crawls with difficulty, allowing the synth to sing the trumpets of the armistice which are assisted by dark murmurs. Calling Cosmos walks in its ashes with such a heavy approach and orchestrations that are akin to the melody of Desire. There are stars and tinkles circling all around my listening room when a more lively rhythm structures Calling Cosmos in some kind of ambient EDM. If the percussion tools are superb, the synth is not left out with particularly good lunar solos which slow down the rhythmic vision of the title. A little ambient passage with tears of Vangelis and synthesized voices, and then the duo Observing System & Nattefrost brings us back to this rhythm which flirts with the borde r s of a Techno for Zombies always coated of great synth solos. A good title which, attached to Desire, offers a nice opening to SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE.

Nattefrost fans have been waiting for this album for a long time. They won't be disappointed by it! In a smudge-free production, available on CD, vinyl and download, Bjorn Jeppesen offers what he does best with an EM drawn to his rocker side in his DJ jacket and dance music. SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE is a solid 40-minute musical project filled with sound experiences that he spreads throughout the 7 tracks. Always favoring the rhythms of the Düsseldorf School, there are many references to Kraftwerk in this album, the Danish musician doesn't hesitate to make use of his Vocoder, nor to disperse the effects of his voice synthesized in an album where the Gothic vision remains unshakable, even on a cosmic and Dance Music level.

Energy - Vibration - Frequency offers energizing music that is in harmony with the meaning of the title. El ectronic percussions and bass pulsations support the spasmodic movement of the sequencer. The track goes through two atmospheric phases dominated by fluttering metal wings and other cosmic elements, each time modifying its rhythmic opening which develops into creative Dance Music and overhung by other very good synth solos. The opening of I am.… makes in big Techno with lines of ambient rhythms and stroboscopic which lean on good percussions of the boom-boom genre. The title evolves with a spasmodic approach in an Ambient House à la Moonbooter. The title evolves with a progressive vision linked to tribal-cosmic chants on a Trance hymn. It's an intelligent Techno à la Jean-Michel Jarre with percussive elements which embellish it. The title ends with one of these synthesized speeches that Nattefrost has implanted all over his new album. Into the Subconscious is another EDM title à la Moonbooter. A Chill-Out with arpeggios that are full of stagnant water. This protective wrap surround s them comfortably in a pocket that emits white radiation when it bursts into the air. The rhythm is curt with tssitt-tssitt and pulsations which are too far ahead of the arpeggios' harmonic portion. Obviously, another line of sequences and/or arpeggios flutter in rotating circles all around this cosmic dance with a voice that seems to constantly challenge us. Not exactly ideal for paranoid people, but the music is viral with many layers of rhythms and moods as well as bits of melody that are too evanescent to get attached to. Also composed with Observing System, In Alignment is a purely Dance Music track, while Receive is designed in the image of Kraftwerk. It looks like a cross between Music Non-Stop, for the hyper technoïd vision of the rhythm, and Tour de France whose gasps of cyclists are heard in superb percussive effects. Obviously, everything goes at a higher speed!

There is no Berlin School in SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE, well maybe a little in the finale of Into the Subcons cious, which is a pure EDM album where the scents of Electronica are badly damaged in some phases of the album. Granted, my 62 year old ears worked hard but they had fun. Because as long as listening to Techno, Trance or explosive dance music, I prefer to listen to it with artists like Brainwork, Stefan Erbe, Moonbooter and certainly Nattefrost who at each new album succeeds in his turn of seduction with an explosive title. I am ... should stand out!
